Washed Meetup Membership: Heavy Attrition

Washed Meetup Membership: Heavy Attrition

category: "meet-ups"

Now that our meet-up groups' membership lists have been washed, those who have not visited our groups' pages on meetup.com before August 01, 2021 have been deleted.

Again, I want to emphasize that no one is banned. The issue is the longevity of the groups and there being a lot of inactive members on the rolls.

Here are the stats -- pre-wash / post-wash:
Laravel Toronto:  508 / 28
York Region PHP: 237 / 22
GTA PHP: 2,126 / 50

You read that right ☺ We are down to 100 total members. An astounding 97% attrition rate.

So that explains why GTA-PHP RSVP rates were so low.

On the other hand, I am excited to be with those who remain.

Over the last few months we have tried twice to host in-person meet-ups, thanks to an incredible new corporate meet-up host. The Ontario regulations in effect are, how shall I put this, not entirely encouraging of in-person meet-ups.

The reality is that we will likely not have in-person meet-ups in the foreseeable future.

There is no doubt that there is intense fatigue with the virtual meet-ups. As well, the ability to talk with fellow devs -- the "hallway track" -- is virtually zero (sorry, could not resist).

Instead of worrying about scheduling the next virtual meet-up, I want to focus on setting up how we can talk to each other. Such as a Discord server. What do you suggest? How should we set it up?

Speak up ☺ Inundate my inbox. I want to hear from each and every one of you ☺ Check in ☺
